About This Property

Denis Private Island Lodge sits on a privately owned 375-acre coral island about 95 kilometres (60 miles) north of Mahé, on the northern edge of the Seychelles Bank. Cottages stand metres from the ocean, among casuarinas and coconut palms, looking onto turquoise water. None of the island is off-limits.

There are 23 free-standing cottages and villas: three Beach Cottages (90 m²), ten Deluxe Beach Cottages (110 m²), nine Beachfront Spa Cottages (150 m²) and one Beach Villa (325 m²). Furniture and wood flooring are made at the island’s carpentry workshop. Every category has air-conditioning, a ceiling fan, a sea-facing verandah, tea and coffee (including Nespresso), and an open-air bathroom with an al fresco shower in a private courtyard.

There is no in-room internet, no mobile signal and no television in the cottages — Wi-Fi is limited to communal areas (library and/or bar). Partner room counts that list 23 Deluxe Cottages plus a Family Villa do not match the operator’s current four-category, 23-key list; this listing follows denisisland.com.

The stay is sold on full board (breakfast, lunch and dinner). The kitchen is farm-to-table: cattle for milk, yoghurt and cheese, pork and fowl, island fruit and vegetables, and fish from the doorstep. Breakfast and lunch are buffets; dinner is a five-course table d’hôte, with barbecue nights and private candle-lit dinners on the beach. Drinks are not on the published full-board list.

Conservation is the island’s other product. The Green Islands Foundation began here. Hawksbill and green turtles nest on the protected shoreline; the lagoon has national protected status; native forest has been restored; giant land tortoises are reared; and translocated endemic birds can be seen on a morning walk.

Access is a scheduled ~30-minute flight from Mahé to the grass airstrip (Denis Island Airport, DEI). From 1 May 2026 the published schedule is five days a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday). Denis was awarded Two MICHELIN Keys in 2025. For another Seychelles island stay see Le Duc de Praslin Hotel & Villas; Azura Benguerra Island is a comparable private-island lodge off Mozambique.

Why We Love It

We like Denis because it is still an island, not a resort village. Twenty-three cottages on 375 acres, a working farm a few hundred metres from the dining pavilion, and no phone signal in the room — that is the unplug the operator is actually selling, and it is why the place works after a safari week on the mainland.

The conservation is not a brochure footnote. Turtles nest on the same beaches you swim off; the lagoon is protected; and this is the only island where a morning walk can turn up four of Seychelles’ rarest endemic birds. We would walk the lighthouse, the 1935 village and chapel, and the tortoise enclosure before we booked a spa hour.

Do not come for in-room Wi-Fi or a kids’ club. Come for the house reef, a kayak in the lagoon, and a five-course dinner built from what the island grew that day. Fishing and diving are the extras, and they are worth the extras: the Drop Off is minutes away, not an hour from Mahé.

Book the flights with the room — from May 2026 there is no scheduled service on Mondays or Wednesdays — and give the stay enough nights to match the airstrip calendar.

How to Get There

From Seychelles International Airport (SEZ), Mahé

Denis Island is about 95 kilometres (60 miles) north of Mahé. The only published access is a light-aircraft flight of about 30 minutes from the domestic terminal to Denis Island Airport (DEI), a grass airstrip. There is no scheduled ferry.

Island flight schedule (operator, from 1 May 2026)

Scheduled flights five days a week: Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday (no scheduled flights on Monday and Wednesday). Published timings: Mahé to Denis 11:30; Denis to Mahé 12:15. Check in 45 minutes before departure at the location the reservations team advises. The operator states that once a room booking is confirmed, a return airfare is automatically reserved with the reservation — confirm whether that seat is billed inside the room rate or as a separate air ticket. SeyVillas publishes a return-flight add-on of €550 per adult (not used as Price From). Soft-sided luggage limits on partner pages are typically 15 kg checked plus a small 7 kg hand bag. Give international-flight details at least 14 days ahead so the island flight can be held.

Nearby Attractions

Things to Do

At the property

Swim in the lodge pool and the protected lagoon. Use the library, the split-level lounge and bar, the boutique, and the floodlit tennis court. Bicycles and a jogging trail are the way around 375 acres.

Guided nature walks take in the farm, giant tortoise enclosure, old village and chapel (houses dating to 1935), the cemetery, and the ~100-year-old lighthouse. Wellness treatments are in-cottage or in the Spa Cottage pavilion. Dinner can be in the pavilion or as a private beach setting.

In the area

The house reef and lagoon are the immediate playground: complimentary snorkelling equipment and kayaks on partner pages. The PADI centre runs lessons and dives for turtles, dolphins and, seasonally, whale sharks (extra). Deep-sea fishing to the Drop Off — the edge of the Mahé plateau, about 10–15 minutes by boat — is the island’s other headline, with a catch-and-release rule for billfish. Spear fishing is illegal in Seychelles.

Day trips

You are already on the destination. There is no ferry and no day-trip village. The operator can arrange charters; most guests stay put, walk or cycle the island, and fly back to Mahé on the published 12:15 departure.

Good to Know

Flights: From 1 May 2026 there is no scheduled island flight on Monday or Wednesday. Build the stay around Tuesday–Sunday departures.

Children: Children under 12 are welcome; contact reservations for all bookings that include under-12s. Partner occupancy: cottages max 2 adults, or 2 adults + 2 children under 12, or 2 adults + 1 person 12+. Infants under 2 commonly free. No kids’ club.

Meal plan: Full board (breakfast, lunch, dinner). Drinks, diving, fishing and spa extra unless a package says otherwise. Environmental levy SCR 100 per person per night from age 12, added at check-out.

Digital detox: No mobile signal; no in-room Wi-Fi or TV. Limited Wi-Fi in the library/bar.

Access: Not generally suitable for wheelchair users (natural paths, walking distances).

Who It's For

Couples and honeymooners who will unplug; families comfortable without a kids’ club or in-room Wi-Fi (under-12s welcome, book through reservations); divers and anglers who want the Drop Off close. Not for guests who need a wheelchair, a daily ferry, or Monday/Wednesday island flights after 1 May 2026.

Best Time to Visit

Open year-round; access follows the island flight days. Shoulder months March–April and October–November are the calmer seas (also the operator’s more comfortable trolling window for beginners). End of May to end of September can be choppier and is the billed best period to troll for marlin and sailfish. Northwest monsoon in the wider Seychelles is typically November–March. Whale sharks are often noted around Seychelles September–November. From 1 May 2026 there are no scheduled flights on Monday or Wednesday.
