About This Property
Governors’ Camp sits on a forested bend of the Mara River in the Musiara sector of the Masai Mara National Reserve. It has been on this site since 1972, which Go2Africa calls one of the oldest tented camps still running in Kenya. The official count is 24 tents: 19 luxury tents facing the river and five family tents facing the plains. Unfenced. Hippo graze the lawns after dark; elephant come through camp.
The point of the address is Musiara Marsh and the river. Game drives fan out through the reserve — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and, from about July to October, the wildebeest migration, with crossings recorded on the river in front of camp in some years. Go2Africa notes that all guides hold at least a silver qualification from the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association. Exclusive-use photographic Land Rovers can be booked. Ballooning, a walking safari outside the reserve, and a visit to the Mara Rianda Maasai manyatta are the usual extras.
Tents are classic canvas with en-suite bathrooms (hot and cold running water, flush toilet, shower heated with eco-friendly briquettes), a private verandah, fan, hairdryer, safe and complementary Wi-Fi. Family tents are two bedrooms plus a lounge, about 174 m² on Africa A-Z, with an optional extra single. One river-bend tent is flagged for honeymooners. Two family tents and one classic tent are wheelchair-friendly.
The bar tent opens onto a deck over the river; the dining tent looks over the plains. Go2Africa: breakfast and lunch as buffets on the riverbank; dinner a candlelit four-course meal, then drinks around a bonfire. A spa tent does massages, facials, scrubs, manicures and pedicures. There is no swimming pool. Power is solar (operator), with a generator backup on Expert Africa’s visit notes.
Go2Africa prices the stay as Full Board. The operator’s own 2026 sheet also folds in house drinks, laundry, airstrip transfers and up to three activities; Masai Mara park fees sit on top. Children of all ages are welcome, with a kids’ club. It is a large camp by Mara standards — Expert Africa’s figure is around 56 guests — so you will share sightings, especially in migration months.
Fly Wilson to Musiara (about 45 minutes). The airstrip is a few minutes from camp.
Why We Love It
We send people to Governors’ for the geography, not the gimmicks. Musiara Marsh, the Mara River and a camp that has sat on the same bend since 1972. Hippo on the lawns. Migration crossings that, in some years, happen in front of the deck. That is the product.
It is a proper family camp: five family tents on the plains side, a kids’ club, cots, and no minimum age. Guides with KPSGA silver or better. A spa tent if you want a rest day. Solar power now, briquette-heated showers, and a Gold eco rating on the current operator sheet.
We are honest about the trade. This is inside the national reserve, so you share the roads. Twenty-four tents is not intimate. Go2Africa prices it as full board; park fees sit on top. Confirm drinks, because the operator’s own rate card is more inclusive than the Go2Africa label.
Come for three nights if you can, longer in July–October. Fly Wilson to Musiara and you are in camp before lunch.
Rooms & Details
Luxury Tent

Nineteen luxury tents face the Mara River, made up as twins or doubles. Each has an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower, basin and flush toilet, a private verandah, fan, Wi-Fi, hairdryer, dressing gowns, a safe and filtered drinking water. Tents sit on steel frames over concrete plinths.
One river-bend tent (the Justus / honeymoon suite) has a bathtub. One classic tent has a wheelchair ramp and a modified bathroom. The camp is in the Musiara sector of the Masai Mara, a short hop from Angama Mara on the escarpment.
Family Tent

Five family tents sit in riverine forest and look over the plains rather than the river. Each has a double bedroom, a twin (convertible to double), a central living area and a wide verandah, about 174 m². Standard occupancy is four; an optional fifth single and a cot on request.
Two family tents are wheelchair-friendly, with a ramp and grab rails. Both bedrooms are en suite, with fans, hairdryers and sunloungers on a raised wooden platform.
Main camp

The bar tent and deck sit over the Mara River; the dining tent looks over the plains. A lounge, spa tent, shop and lawns complete the main area; there is no swimming pool. Complimentary laundry, Wi-Fi in public areas and tents, 24-hour security, and a Mongoose Club for children.
Neighbouring conservancy stays on this site include Mahali Mzuri and Angama Safari Camp. When the herds are still south of the border, Serengeti National Park is the other side of the same migration.

Who It's For
Families (all ages, five family tents, kids’ club) and first-time Mara travellers who want a classic river-bank camp inside the reserve, especially in migration months. Photographers who will pay for an exclusive vehicle. Honeymooners who specifically want the river-bend suite; quieter couples may prefer sister camp Il Moran. Not for anyone who wants a private conservancy with no other vehicles, a swimming pool, or a very small camp — 24 tents is large by Mara standards, and sightings are shared.
