About This Property
Angama Mara is quite simply one of the most spectacular safari lodges in Africa. Perched on the rim of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, 300 metres above the floor of the Masai Mara, the views alone justify the visit — a vast, shimmering expanse of savannah stretching to the horizon where the Great Migration plays out below.
The lodge takes its name from the Swahili word for “suspended in mid-air,” and that's exactly how it feels. Two intimate camps of 15 tented suites each are tucked into the indigenous forest along the escarpment edge, each angled to capture the view. Floor-to-ceiling glass fronts slide open to reveal the Mara below, blurring the line between inside and out.
The suites themselves are extraordinary — spacious canvas-and-glass pavilions with hand-stitched leather headboards, freestanding copper bathtubs, and private decks that hang over the valley. Every detail has been considered, from the Maasai-beaded light fittings to the locally woven textiles.
But Angama is more than a view. The team includes some of Kenya's most experienced guides, and game drives descend the escarpment into the Mara Triangle — one of the most wildlife-dense areas on the continent. During the Great Migration (July–October), the river crossings are a spectacle of primal drama.
Why We Love It
The first time you walk into your tent at Angama and see the Mara spread out below you like a living map, you understand why this place has won every award going. It's a view that makes you catch your breath every single time, even after days of looking at it.
But what elevates Angama beyond the view is the warmth. The staff remember your name, your drink, your preferred game drive time. The Maasai guides are walking encyclopaedias of the bush. The food is inventive and beautifully presented. And the community programmes — the beading studio, the shamba garden, the Angama Foundation — give the whole experience a depth that luxury alone can't achieve.
If you can only visit one safari lodge in your lifetime, this is a very strong contender.
