About This Property

The Mushara Outpost sits on a private reserve about 10 km from Etosha National Park’s Von Lindequist Gate, on the banks of an ancient dry riverbed — omuramba in Herero. It is the intimate tented camp in the Mushara Collection: eight custom wood-and-canvas structures for 16 guests, each raised 1.5 metres on a wooden deck under trees.

Tents are more chalet than canvas fly. Official kit: private terrace, twin or double beds with mosquito nets, air conditioning, minibar, tea and coffee, safe, telephone, hairdryer and charging sockets. A large glass sliding door and floor-to-ceiling windows (fly-screened) pull in the bush. The open-plan bathroom has an enclosed toilet and a glass shower; unzip the outer canvas and the shower opens to the trees. Expert Africa and Fodor’s also describe a semi-outdoor shower, fully enclosed for privacy. Wi-Fi is listed for the main lodge (official: slow); Expert Africa found it in bedrooms too, still patchy.

The main house is a farm-style building with high walls, a corrugated-iron roof and a wraparound veranda facing northeast for shade. Lounge, fireplace in winter, bookshelves, dining indoors or out, a swimming pool and gardens. A small hide looks over a modest waterhole. Meals use herbs, fruit and vegetables from the Mushara garden. Go2Africa: buffet breakfasts and set-menu lunches in the farmhouse; dinner under a clear night sky, with South African wines.

Guided game drives go into public eastern Etosha, not around the reserve: morning 07:00–11:00 and afternoon 15:00 till sunset on the 2026 activity card. That means park rules — no off-road, no walking, no night drives. Many guests self-drive. Fully inclusive rates include two scheduled drives a day; dinner-bed-and-breakfast guests pay extra (N$1,450 per person in 2026, park fees in).

Go2Africa’s published from-price is USD 535 per person sharing, fully inclusive. Children under 12 are not accommodated. Check-in from 14:00; check-out 10:00.

Why We Love It

We love the Outpost because it is a farmhouse with eight proper tents, not a hotel on the C38. The main building — corrugated roof, wraparound veranda, long table, garden — is the reason Expert Africa and Go2Africa both reach for “lived-in”. You eat there; you come back to a deck 1.5 metres up, glass to the omuramba, and a shower you can unzip to the trees.

The geography is simple. Ten kilometres from Von Lindequist, so eastern Etosha is a morning, not a relocation. We would book the fully inclusive rate: two scheduled park drives, lunch and local drinks are then in the number. Dinner-bed-and-breakfast only makes sense if you are determined to self-drive every session and pack a lunch.

It is 16 guests, 12 years and older, no night drives, no walks. That is the trade for a public-park gate. Come for two or three nights, sit the hide between drives, and do not confuse it with Mushara Lodge or Bush Camp on the same road.

Things to Do

At the property

Sit the veranda, swim, or use the small hide at the waterhole (crimson-breasted shrike, violet-backed starling, francolin and helmet shrike recorded by Expert Africa). Homemade meals from the garden; dinner often outside. No television. Wi-Fi in the main lodge, described as slow.

In the local area

Morning and afternoon guided drives into eastern Etosha with Mushara guides (radio contact between vehicles). On fully inclusive rates two scheduled drives a day are included; on dinner, bed and breakfast they are extra. Private vehicles can be pre-booked. Self-drive guests use Von Lindequist Gate like any other park visitor — park opening hours apply.

Day trips

A full day in Etosha with a lunch pack (N$200 pp on the 2026 rack) if you want to stay out until the gate closes. Tsumeb is about 100 km for supplies or a doctor. Sister properties Mushara Lodge, Bush Camp and Villa Mushara are on the same reserve but are separate bookings.

Good to Know

Children: Official: 12 years and older only; adult rates. Expert Africa: best for 16+; unfenced pool needs supervision. No extra beds or cots (OTA house rules). Meal plan: Go2Africa from-price is fully inclusive. Official DBB is dinner, bed and breakfast — lunch and activities extra. FI adds lunch, two scheduled Etosha drives, local bar/minibar drinks and laundry. Dietary requirements with advance notice (Expert Africa). Activities: All guided drives are inside public Etosha (no off-road, no walking, no pre-sunrise or post-sunset access). Expert Africa: more guests than vehicle seats, so pre-book drives. Fodor’s notes bush walks are no longer offered. Power and comms: 220 V on the national grid; Expert Africa also notes generator backup and some solar. Official: Wi-Fi in the main lodge, slow and unreliable; Expert Africa found it in bedrooms too, still sporadic. No cell-phone reception. No television. Health: Malaria area. Nearest doctor/hospital: Tsumeb (about 100 km). Not wheelchair friendly. Payments: Visa and Mastercard; cash in Namibian dollars or rand. Laundry extra on DBB, included on FI. Sister camps: Mushara Lodge, Mushara Bush Camp and Villa Mushara share the reserve — do not confuse the products. Two guide tents sit besides the eight guest tents.

Who It's For

Couples, honeymooners and friends who want a small, comfortable tented base a few minutes from eastern Etosha, whether self-driving or on included guided drives. Families only with children aged 12 and over. Not for guests who need night drives, walking safaris or off-road viewing — those stay on a private reserve such as Onguma. Not wheelchair friendly. Better for travellers who will take the fully inclusive rate if they want the two daily park drives in the price.

Best Time to Visit

Open all year. Expert Africa treats May–October as the stronger Etosha months, with July–September the peak for wildlife at waterholes. April and November are shoulder. December–March is greener, hotter and quieter, with newborn animals and migrant birds, but game is more dispersed. Expert Africa suggests two to three nights.
