Ol Pejeta Conservancy guide
Overview
Ol Pejeta Conservancy lies on the Laikipia Plateau in central Kenya, between the Aberdares and Mount Kenya and just north of the equator. It is a non-profit wildlife conservancy that combines tourism, cattle ranching and community projects.
Ol Pejeta is famous for rhinos. It has the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa, and it cares for the last two northern white rhinos in the world. The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, run with the Jane Goodall Institute, gives a home to rescued chimpanzees.
Unlike many private conservancies, Ol Pejeta is open to day visitors as well as overnight guests. Activities include game drives, night drives, lion tracking, walks, visits to the northern white rhinos and behind-the-scenes conservation experiences.
Wildlife & Biodiversity
Big game
All of the Big Five are present, along with cheetah, African wild dog, spotted hyena and Grevy’s zebra.
Rhinos and chimpanzees
Black and southern white rhino are seen often, and the two northern white rhinos live in a guarded enclosure. The chimpanzee sanctuary can be visited from viewing platforms.
Best Time to Visit
Short answer: June to October and January to February, the dry seasons, for the best game viewing.
| Months | Season | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Jun – Oct | Long dry season | Clear days and excellent game viewing. |
| Nov – Dec | Short rains | Afternoon showers and green plains. |
| Jan – Feb | Short dry season | Warm and dry. |
| Mar – May | Long rains | The wettest months, but still good for game. |
Ol Pejeta sits at about 1,800 metres, so mornings and evenings can be cool.
