Overview
Loisaba Conservancy covers about 58,000 acres (around 235 km²) on the north-western edge of the Laikipia plateau in central Kenya. Its landscape changes from open plains and acacia woodland on the plateau to rocky escarpments that drop towards the Ewaso Nyiro River.
Loisaba is run as a non-profit conservancy, and tourism income pays for wildlife protection and for programmes with the neighbouring communities. Part of the conservancy is now a designated rhino sanctuary, and Loisaba is part of a wider network of Laikipia conservancies that allow elephants and other wildlife to move freely.
The few camps here offer game drives, guided walks, horse and camel rides, and the conservancy is known for its star beds, open platforms where you can sleep under the stars. Because there are so few visitors, sightings are rarely crowded.
Wildlife & Biodiversity
Big game
Elephant are common, and lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted and striped hyena and African wild dog are all present.
Dry-country species
Reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Beisa oryx and gerenuk represent the northern species, alongside buffalo, eland and plains zebra.
Best Time to Visit
Short answer: June to October and December to March, during the dry seasons.
| Months | Season | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Jun – Oct | Long dry season | Animals gather near water, and the bush is thin. |
| Nov | Short rains | Green, with occasional storms. |
| Dec – Mar | Short dry season | Warm days and good game viewing. |
| Apr – May | Long rains | Wet. Some activities may be limited. |
Nights on the plateau are cool, which is part of the appeal of sleeping out on a star bed.
