About This Property

Onguma The Fort sits on Onguma Nature Reserve, on the eastern edge of Etosha National Park, looking over Fischer’s Pan and a waterhole. The main building is a split-level Afro-Moroccan fort — raw walls, stone cladding, antique windows and doors, a tower bar — unlike anything else in this part of Namibia. Go2Africa also flags Indian design notes and African-inspired dining.

Official accommodation is 13 suites, each with a view of the waterhole and the pan: eleven Bush Suites about fifty metres apart, one Honeymoon Suite, and the Sultan Suite inside the main tower. Go2Africa still says 12 air-conditioned suites with outdoor showers; the lodge’s own pages are the 13-suite split. Bush and Honeymoon suites have indoor and outdoor showers, a fireplace, air conditioning, a bar fridge, tea and coffee, a private deck with sun loungers, a wood-fired hot tub, mosquito nets, a safe, yoga mats and free Wi-Fi. The Honeymoon Suite adds an outdoor bath and lounge. The Sultan Suite has a bedroom, private lounge, viewing deck, satellite television, open shower and indoor bath.

Shared spaces include a lounge, two dining areas, the Tower Bar, a swimming pool, a safari boutique, an art gallery, spa and Fischer’s Pan viewing areas. You can eat indoors, by the lantern-lit pool, in the courtyard or by the water feature. Free Wi-Fi runs through the camp. Secure parking is listed for self-drive 4×4s and SUVs.

The location does two jobs. Etosha is a public park through Von Lindequist Gate, a hundred metres from the reserve entrance. Onguma is private: only staying guests, a three-vehicle cap at sightings, and no park gate times. Lion and cheetah are encountered regularly on the reserve; black and white rhino, leopard and elephant are present; giraffe, zebra, oryx and plains game roam; there is a large white-backed vulture breeding colony. Four of the Big Five are possible across the two areas. Onguma has been a Black Rhino Custodian with Namibia’s environment ministry since 2003.

Activities include sunrise and sundowner drives on the reserve, morning and afternoon Etosha excursions (about four hours), guided bush walks (16 years and older), the Onkolo photographic hide, the Dream Cruiser sleep-out, bush breakfasts and dinners, and spa treatments. On dinner-bed-and-breakfast rates those outings are extra; the all-inclusive rate includes two scheduled activities a day.

Go2Africa’s published from-price is USD 700 per person sharing, half board. Children under seven are not permitted at The Fort. Check-in is from 14:00; check-out at 10:00.

Why We Love It

We love The Fort because the view is the architecture. Fischer’s Pan, a waterhole, camel thorn trees, and Etosha stretching behind — from a Moroccan-inspired tower that should not work in Namibia and somehow does. Sundowners here are the reason many guests pick this camp on the reserve.

The geography is equally practical. The Onguma gate is about a hundred metres from Von Lindequist, so a morning in public Etosha and an afternoon on a private reserve (three vehicles at a sighting, no park closing time) is a single base, not a relocation. Lion, cheetah, rhino and a serious vulture colony on the reserve; elephant and the rest of the pan in the park.

Thirteen suites is the right scale: eleven bush rooms fifty metres apart, each with a wood-fired hot tub and an outdoor shower, plus a genuine honeymoon suite and a Sultan’s room in the tower. We would book half board only if we planned to self-drive Etosha; the all-inclusive rate is the one that actually includes the two daily activities.

It is unfenced and not for small children. That is a feature, not a footnote. Come for the pan at last light, not for a family pool camp.

Namibia
Onguma Nature Reserve on the eastern boundary of Etosha National Park, Namibia, overlooking Fischer’s Pan and a lodge waterhole. The reserve entrance is about 100 metres from the Von Lindequist (Namutoni) Gate. Current Onguma copy puts the reserve at 35,970 hectares (an older fact sheet said 34,000 ha).
GPS Coordinates -18.73844, 17.04347
Nearest Airport Onguma Airstrip (private, on the reserve; transfers included on lodge rates). Mokuti Airstrip also used. International arrivals: Windhoek Hosea Kutako (about 5.5 hours by road).

How to Get There

By road from Windhoek (Hosea Kutako International Airport)

About five and a half hours, almost entirely on tar. Stay on the B1 north to the Tsumeb turn-off, then the C38 toward the Von Lindequist (Namutoni) Gate of Etosha. The Onguma entrance is about 100 metres from that gate — an Onguma sign on the right roughly 500 m before the park gate. From the reserve entrance to camp is a maximum of about 12 km on well-maintained dirt; a 4×4 is not required. Check-in from 14:00; advise your expected arrival time.

Leaving Etosha from the west

Exit at Von Lindequist Gate, Namutoni, and turn immediately left into Onguma Nature Reserve. Follow signs; each lodge is about 10–20 minutes on dirt roads.

By air

Onguma has a private airstrip. Transfers from the Onguma Airstrip are included on published lodge rates (no landing, parking or pick-up fees). Mokuti Airstrip is also used: guest arrival and departure transfers are included, but Mokuti landing and parking fees are for the guest’s account. Advise estimated flight times when you book.

Things to Do

At the property

Watch the waterhole and Fischer’s Pan from your deck, the pool or the tower. Sundowners at the Tower Bar; Go2Africa’s expert flags the rooftop lookout. Swim, use the spa, or book the Dream Cruiser sleep-out (adults only, extra, weather-dependent in the rains). Yoga mats are in the bush suites. The property is unfenced.

In the local area

Private-reserve sunrise and sundowner game drives (about three hours on the 2026 activity card), guided bush walks of about 1½ hours (minimum age 16), the Onkolo photographic hide (minimum age 7), Young Explorers Walk for children 7–16, and bush breakfasts or dinners. Onguma limits vehicles to three per sighting. All-inclusive guests at The Fort have two scheduled activities per day; dinner-bed-and-breakfast guests pay extra.

Day trips

Guided Etosha excursions through Von Lindequist Gate, morning or afternoon, about four hours. Private full-day vehicles can be booked. Self-drive into Etosha is the other Namibian pattern; The Fort is a few minutes from the gate. The public park and the private reserve are different days: Etosha is open landscape and uncontrolled vehicle numbers; Onguma is staying-guest only.

Who It's For

Couples and honeymooners (Honeymoon and Sultan suites; wood-fired hot tubs), photographers (waterhole, pan sunsets, Onkolo Hide), and self-drive or fly-in safari guests who want Etosha plus a private reserve from one bed. Families with children aged 7 and over; no under-7s, and no third beds. Not the family camp on this reserve — that is Bush Camp or Forest Camp. First-time Namibia travellers who can live with half board or will upgrade to all-inclusive for included drives.

Best Time to Visit

Onguma recommends April–September for a Namibian safari. May–July are the cooler, drier months when wildlife concentrates at waterholes. October–February is warmer, with thunderstorms, young animals and fewer visitors (shoulder season). The Fort is unfenced. A minimum of two nights is recommended; three is the usual guest wish.
