About This Property
Phinda Mountain Lodge sits on a hilltop in &Beyond Phinda Private Game Reserve, looking out over the Lebombo Mountains and a Big 5 wilderness that was rebuilt from farmland. This is &Beyond’s most family-focused camp on the reserve: 23 air-conditioned rooms along a gentle curve of the hillside, each opening to bushveld and mountain views.
Phinda itself is one of Africa’s better-known rewilding stories — 29 866 hectares of restored habitat, famous for cheetah and black rhino as well as lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo. Twice-daily game drives and guided nature walks are the backbone of a stay; rhino tracking, turtle nesting on nearby Maputaland beaches (November to January), Zulu village visits and a Mzinene River boat trip sit just beyond, some at extra cost.
Suites and cottages are split-level and generously sized, with en-suite bathrooms, indoor and outdoor showers, private decks and — except the Family Suite — a private plunge pool. Paved pathways lead down the mountainside from the main lodge. Interiors are designed for comfort rather than fuss: lounge space, air conditioning, and floor-to-ceiling glass that lets the reserve in.
The main lodge gathers a dining room, lounge, shaded terrace and bar, all opening onto verandas with Lebombo views. There is a rim-flow swimming pool, a lookout deck, a well-equipped gym and an open-air Healing Earth massage sala. Evenings typically end around a fire on the deck or in the traditional boma.
Dining is à la carte. Lunch may be on the terrace, the patio or indoors; dinner is often under the stars in the boma. Bush breakfasts and candlelit bush dinners can be arranged. The rate is fully inclusive of meals and selected drinks.
Families are the point of this lodge as much as the view: three interleading Family Cottages, a large Family Suite with direct access to the lodge pool, private guides on those units, and the WILDchild programme of supervised, nature-based activities. Couples and honeymooners are equally well served in the 16 standalone suites.
Why We Love It
We love Phinda Mountain Lodge for the view first: a hilltop perch over the Lebombo foothills, with plunge pools and decks that make the reserve feel like the garden. It is one of the few family lodges where the children’s offering is designed in — Family Cottages, a Family Suite, private guides on those units, and the WILDchild programme — without turning the rest of camp into a crèche.
We also love what Phinda represents. This land was farmland; it is now nearly 30 000 hectares of restored habitat, and the game list still surprises people who only know Kruger: cheetah, black rhino, nyala, and a coastline close enough for turtle nesting in summer.
The rhythm is simple and generous. Morning and afternoon drives, a walk if you want one, lunch on a terrace, dinner in the boma or a bush dinner under the stars. The rate is fully inclusive of meals, selected drinks, laundry and airstrip transfers, which keeps the stay uncluttered.
If you want a tiny, adults-only hideaway, look at Phinda’s smaller sister lodges. If you want height, heart and a family safari that still feels like wilderness, this is the one we point to.
