About This Property
We put Lemala Osonjoi on the quieter eastern rim of Ngorongoro Crater, a short drive from Lemala Gate, so a 06:00 departure can have us on the crater floor in about 10–15 minutes — Wetu says that is typically an hour ahead of the Seneto (western) traffic. The lodge opened 15 July 2025. It is named for osonjoi trees, which matter medicinally and symbolically to the Maasai.
Official and Yellow Zebra inventory is 16 standard suites plus two two-bedroom suites (18 units). Marketing copy often says 20 suites — that count matches 16 rooms plus four beds in the two family units, and Wetu Fast Facts also print 20 rooms. Expert Africa, which has reported on the lodge, says 18 timber-clad suites. Standard suites have a king bed (twin on request), wood stove, winter-weight duvet, hot-water bottles, mini-bar and coffee station, a lounge with a day-bed nook, picture windows into the forest, indoor shower, free-standing bath and (Go2Africa / Yellow Zebra) an outdoor shower. Family units take up to four adults and two children aged 2–12 on the Wetu unit rate.
The double-volume main area holds a lounge and bar, an outdoor fire deck and an indoor heated pool — Yellow Zebra says it is solar-heated, which is unusual on the crater rim. A separate spa suite sits among the trees. Meals are individual tables; Go2Africa and andBeyond flag a fully catered lunch on the crater floor as a rare NCAA privilege.
Go2Africa’s published stay is a Game Package from USD 982 per person sharing. Official Full Board (meals, house drinks, Wi-Fi, laundry — no drives) starts at USD 690 in green season. Park and concession fees are extra on both. Lake Manyara airstrip is about two hours by road. Children: Wetu and Expert Africa 5+; confirm, because rate-sheet language starts at 3 years and Go2Africa only says under-12s are welcome.
Why We Love It
We love Osonjoi for the gate. Lemala Gate on the eastern rim is the practical reason to sleep here: Wetu’s 10–15 minutes to the floor, and an hour’s head start on Seneto, is the difference between first light with lion and a queue of closed vehicles.
The lodge is new (15 July 2025) and it reads that way — timber suites, wood stoves, a solar-heated indoor pool, a spa in the trees. We would take a standard suite for a couple and a two-bedroom unit for a family, and we would not count ‘20 suites’ as 20 buildings; the honest split is 16 + 2.
We would book the Game Package, not bare Full Board, unless we already had a private vehicle: Go2Africa’s headline is the Game Package, and crater fees still sit outside the rate. The crater-floor lunch is the outing we would not skip if NCAA still allows it.
Come for the eastern rim and the pool, not for a long TripAdvisor history. Confirm the child minimum in writing. Pack for 8,000 ft nights.
Rooms & Details
Standard Suite

Sixteen timber-clad standard suites, spaced through the forest on Ngorongoro’s eastern rim. King-size bed (twin on request) with a winter-weight duvet, slow-burning wood stove, mini-bar and coffee station.
En-suite walk-in shower, free-standing bath, dressing area and flush toilet, plus an outdoor shower. A lounge with a day-bed nook and large picture windows into the forest. Triples on request.

Two family suites, each with two separate bedrooms. Sold as a unit; maximum four adults and two children aged 2–12 on the operator rate sheet.

Lounge and bar

A double-volume lounge and bar with a wood-burning stove, individual dining tables and forest windows. An outdoor viewing deck has a fire.
The lodge is a short drive from Lemala Gate in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, typically 10–15 minutes down to the crater floor. Transfers commonly use Lake Manyara National Park airstrip, about two hours by road.
Indoor heated pool

A solar-heated indoor swimming pool with floor-to-ceiling forest windows — unusual on the crater rim. The other crater-rim stay on this site is andBeyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge.
Spa

A separate spa suite sits among the trees. Treatments are extra. Northern Circuit itineraries often add Serengeti National Park after the crater.

Go2Africa’s published stay is a Game Package (range USD 982–2,402 PPS), so crater drives sit inside that quote — confirm which board you are on. Crater-floor private lunch is a lodge signature (Go2Africa / andBeyond / Yellow Zebra); treat it as a booked activity, not an automatic Full Board inclusion. Spa extra.
Location
How to Get There
By air to Lake Manyara
Go2Africa’s nearest airport is Lake Manyara Airport (LKY). Yellow Zebra: about two hours by road from Manyara airstrip to the lodge. Official Lemala: a landing at Manyara Airstrip on the escarpment above Lake Manyara, then a scenic road transfer. Airstrip transfers are extra on Full Board (Wetu).
By road
Official: an easy scenic drive from an overnight in Arusha, or from safari camps in Tarangire or Lake Manyara National Parks. The lodge sits on a hill just back from the crater rim, close to Lemala Gate on the quieter eastern side. Wetu: game drives from camp may start as early as 06:00; guests can be on the crater floor in 10–15 minutes — typically about an hour’s head start on vehicles using the busier Seneto (western) descent. Expert Africa: accessible by self-drive or fly-and-transfer.

Good to Know
Opened: 15 July 2025 (Wetu). Named for osonjoi trees, which have symbolic and medicinal meaning for the Maasai (official). Children: Go2Africa: children under 12 welcome. Wetu Fast Facts: minimum child age 5. Expert Africa: 5 and over. Official Wetu rates: child 2 years and under not recommended at Lemala Tanzania properties; Tanzania child ages 3–15. Mahlatini lists 3 years+. Confirm the minimum when you book. Two-bedroom suites for families; triples on request; day-bed nook can be extra sleeping (Travel Promoters / official). Board: Do not confuse Full Board (meals, house drinks, Wi-Fi, laundry — no drives) with Go2Africa’s Game Package (drives in the rate). NCAA park and concession fees extra on both. Altitude: about 2,500 m / 8,000 ft (The Hotel Guide / Timbuktu). Wood stoves, winter-weight duvets and hot-water bottles in the suites. Expert Africa: take care with hot wood-burning stoves. Pool and spa: indoor heated pool (Yellow Zebra: solar-heated; floor-to-ceiling forest windows). Separate spa suite in the trees; treatments extra. Safety: Yellow Zebra: unfenced wildlife area; escorts after dark as a matter of course. Malaria protection recommended (Expert Africa). High-risk dangerous animals. Vehicles: Go2Africa lists a private vehicle with driver among activities; Wetu: private vehicle available. Crater drives use closed Land Cruisers (Yellow Zebra).
Who It's For
Travellers who want a new, high-spec crater-rim lodge on the quieter eastern descent rather than the busy western hotels, with a proper indoor pool and a spa after cool 2,500 m nights. Couples in the standard suites; families in the two-bedroom units (confirm 5+ versus 3+). Photographers who will leave camp at 06:00. Not for guests who assume Full Board includes crater drives — it does not, unless you are on a Game Package. Not for travellers who need published GPS, a long review history (opened July 2025), or a fenced garden lodge in Karatu.
Best Time to Visit
Open year-round (Go2Africa, Expert Africa, Mahlatini). Wildlife stays in the crater through the year. Go2Africa: March–May rains draw eland and buffalo to green vegetation; November–January clearer skies and zebra and wildebeest on the highlands. Expert Africa treats July–September as peak crater months (dry, busy). Green-season Full Board on the Wetu card is 1 March–31 May 2027. Lodge opened 15 July 2025 (Wetu / Travel Promoters).
