About This Property
Baines’ River Camp sits on the northern bank of the Zambezi in Zambia’s Eastern Chiawa Game Management Area, looking across to Mana Pools. It is named after the painter-explorer Thomas Baines and was built by Tim Featherby. This is not Sanctuary Baines’ Camp in the Okavango.
Official inventory is eight luxury suites and one two-bedroom family unit, maximum 20 guests. The older fact sheet splits the eight as six Explorer (XL king) and two smaller Junior twins; two suites add an outdoor shower. Go2Africa’s “12 luxurious suites” is out of date.
Suites have air-conditioning, ceiling fans, river verandahs, walk-in showers, mini-bars and tea and coffee. The camp is solar-powered on the current accommodation page, with Wi-Fi in rooms and the main area.
You game-view on land and on the river: drives, boat cruises, seasonal canoeing and walks, tiger fishing (catch and release) and birding. The fully inclusive rack wraps twice-daily activities, meals, non-premium drinks, laundry and the Royal Airstrip transfer. Park fees (USD 110 per person per night) and airstrip access are extra. Go2Africa’s from-price is USD 705 per person sharing — the 2026 green-season rack.
The main area is colonial in style: Selous Bar, lounge, dining, an 11 m pool (Go2Africa) and a boma fire. Meals have no set times. Massage is in the suite or on the verandah.
The Boardroom (antique table, projector) is the published quiet workspace. Children under six are not accepted. Open 1 March to 30 November.
The camp sits adjacent to (not inside) Lower Zambezi National Park. Another Lower Zambezi address on our site is Royal Zambezi Lodge.
Why We Love It
We like this Baines because it is the Lower Zambezi one: Chiawa, the river, Mana Pools on the far bank — not the six-suite Okavango camp already on GIA. Eight suites and a family cottage, maximum 20, is the right size for a river camp.
The activity list is why you fly to Royal: drives, boats, canoes, walks and tiger fish, with meals that wait for the vehicle rather than the other way round. Go2Africa’s USD 705 fully inclusive from-price matches the 2026 green-season rack.
We would budget the extra USD 110 a night park fee so the invoice is not a surprise, and we would not arrive with a child under six. Solar power, Wi-Fi in the suites, laundry in, and a pool an elephant can walk past (that photograph is on Go2Africa) is the published comfort. Come for the river. Leave the Okavango Baines for another trip.

Location
How to Get There
By air to Royal Airstrip
Go2Africa’s nearest airport is Royal Airstrip. Official: charter to Royal, then about a 30-minute game-drive to camp (fact sheet: airstrip 9 km, about 40 minutes). Lusaka (LUN) to Royal is about 30 minutes’ flight (Proflight, Royal Zambezi Airlines, Skytrails). Livingstone: scheduled Proflight via Lusaka in season, or private charter about 1h45. Mfuwe: direct in June–October on published days, or via Lusaka. Reservations (Linda Fisher) can book the hops.
By road
Official: Lusaka to camp about 5 hours; high-clearance vehicle; 4×4 in the rains. Do not use Google Maps — ask reservations for directions. Self-drive is described as safe on the FAQ, with a map from the reservations team.
By boat
Official: about 3 hours’ road from Lusaka to Gwabi River Lodge, then a 2–3 hour boat cruise to camp. Boat collections from other Zambezi camps can be arranged.
Nearby Attractions
Lower Zambezi National Park (boat to the gate; Winterthorn / Jeki day trip); Chiawa Game Management Area; Zambezi River (hippo, elephant, tiger fish); Mana Pools World Heritage Site (Zimbabwe, opposite bank — viewed from camp, not a drive-in from here); Conservation Lower Zambezi (Classic Camps note, extra/confirm); village visit (guest notes; extra/confirm)

Good to Know
Not Sanctuary Baines’ Camp: This is Baines’ River Camp on the Lower Zambezi, Zambia (founder Tim Featherby; named after Thomas Baines). Sanctuary Baines’ Camp / Baines’ Lodge is a six-suite Okavango property already on GIA — different country, operator and inventory.
Season: Current official site 1 March–30 November. Older Wetu fact sheet still prints 1 March–15 December and generator-only power — treat as stale. Current accommodation page: solar-powered. FAQ still mentions silenced generators and a solar install.
Check-in / out: Official terms on the rates page: 13:00 / 10:00. Wetu Fast Facts agree 13:00 / 10:00. Website schema.org also prints 14:00 check-in — we have used the terms/Wetu 13:00. Early check-in or late check-out USD 150 per person per event (covers camp facilities, activities and catering; does not guarantee a suite).
Children: No under 6. Family cottage: two bedrooms, two bathrooms (fact sheet) / official page says two bathrooms, one en suite. Go2Africa “Children Under 12 Welcome” is not a minimum of 12.
Rooms: Official site: 8 luxury suites + 1 two-bedroom family unit, max 20 guests. Fact sheet split: 6 Explorer (XL king) + 2 Junior (permanent twin) + Baines Cottage. Go2Africa’s “12 luxurious suites” is stale — not used.
Schema.org numberOfRooms 8 omits the cottage. Two suites have extra outdoor showers (usually honeymoon / special occasion).
Power / Wi-Fi: Official: solar; Wi-Fi in rooms and main area. No mobile signal; WhatsApp over Wi-Fi. UK 3-prong 220/240 V; EU shaver socket in bathrooms.
Safety: Unfenced; wildlife through camp. Escorts 18:00–06:00. Malaria area. Travel insurance insisted on in the terms.
Payments: USD or kwacha in camp; cards Visa/Mastercard with 5% surcharge. Notes older than 2009 or damaged USD often refused by Zambian banks.
GPS: Fact sheet S15°45 E029°13 (minute-level). Schema.org on the current site: -15.7167, 29.40 (29.40 looks rounded). LinkedIn directory 15.7581, 29.2331 sits with the fact sheet.
We have used the fact sheet. What3Words: none published.
Park fees: Extra USD 110 pppn on the official rack (Classic Camps of Zambia copy that folds them into “includes” conflicts — follow bainesrivercamp.com).
Who It's For
Couples and small families (children 6+) who want a lodge on the Zambezi with both river and land activities, and who are comfortable in unfenced big-game country. Go2Africa’s expert flags it for first-time visitors who are nervous of a pure tented camp. Honeymooners can ask for a suite with an outdoor shower. Not for under-sixes. Not Sanctuary Baines’ Camp in Botswana. Closed 1 December–end February.
Best Time to Visit
Open 1 March–30 November (current official site). Closed in the rains. Green season 1 March–30 June and 1–30 November; High season 1 July–31 October. Official FAQ: fishing and birding better in the warmer months; game viewing good all year while open. Fact sheet peaks: river cruises 1 March–15 December (camp now closes 30 November); canoeing 1 June–15 December; walking 1 June–30 September; game drives 1 June–15 November; tiger fishing 1 September–30 November, catch and release. High season (July–October) is the published dry-season game-viewing window.
