Blue Canyon Private Game Reserve guide

Overview

Blue Canyon Private Game Reserve, also known as the Blue Canyon Conservancy, lies just south of Hoedspruit in Limpopo. It is roughly 10,000 hectares, depending on which properties are counted, and is formed from a group of private reserves and wildlife estates, including Moditlo. It is wedged between the Greater Kruger to the east and the Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve and the Drakensberg escarpment to the west.

The conservancy was formed when Jordan Properties and neighbouring landowners dropped their fences and reintroduced elephant, followed by lion and buffalo. Today it is a Big Five reserve shared by lodges, tented camps and private wildlife estates, sitting within the Kruger to Canyons Biosphere.

The setting is one of its main draws. Game drives cross open bushveld plains with the blue wall of the escarpment behind them, and two seasonal rivers lined with jackalberry, sycamore fig and leadwood trees run through the reserve. Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport is only about 7 km away, so guests can land and be on a game drive the same afternoon.

Lodges here are typically smaller and less expensive than those in the Greater Kruger reserves, but still offer guided Big Five drives. Day trips to Kruger’s Orpen Gate, the Panorama Route and the Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre are easy from here.

Wildlife & Biodiversity
