Overview
Kigosi National Park lies in western Tanzania, in the Shinyanga and Tabora regions. It was long a game reserve and was proposed for national park status in 2019, so check its current status and access rules before you plan a visit. It’s part of the Malagarasi-Muyovozi wetland system, one of Tanzania’s most important wetlands and a Ramsar site.
The park is made of miombo woodland, seasonal swamps, rivers and floodplains. It’s one of the remotest and least developed parks in Tanzania.
There are almost no tourist facilities, so Kigosi suits experienced travellers looking for true wilderness, especially birdwatchers.
Wildlife & Biodiversity
Wildlife
Elephant, buffalo, sable and roan antelope and sitatunga live in the park, along with hippo and crocodile.
Birds
The wetlands are important for waterbirds, including the shoebill and wattled crane.
