East Usambara Mountains guide

Overview

The East Usambara Mountains rise above the coastal plain in Tanga Region, north-eastern Tanzania. UNESCO designated the area as the East Usambara Biosphere Reserve in 2000.

The mountains are part of the Eastern Arc, a chain of ancient mountains whose forests have many plants and animals found nowhere else. Forest reserves protect much of what remains, alongside tea estates, farms and villages.

The best way to explore is from Amani Nature Forest Reserve, which has trails, guides and guesthouses.
