About This Property
The Victoria and Alfred Hotel sits on the pierhead of Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, in the 1904 North Quay Warehouse — named for Queen Victoria and Prince Alfred, who opened the breakwater basin in 1870. Newmark Hotels operates the 94-room hotel. Go2Africa still sells it as an elegant Waterfront base with harbour and Table Mountain views, and that geography has not changed.
Official rooms split as 26 Loft Rooms (about 36 m², third floor, Alfred Basin or piazza views), 17 Mountain Facing Rooms (38 m²), 17 Mountain Facing Luxury Rooms (44 m² with a lounge) and 34 Piazza Facing Rooms (38–44 m²). Go2Africa groups the first- and second-floor rooms as Mountain and Piazza-facing Junior Suites, with a dining area on the piazza side and a four-seater lounge on the mountain side. All listed rooms have air-conditioning, king or twins, satellite TV, minibar, tea and coffee, an electronic safe and an en-suite bathroom.
Ginja is the hotel restaurant, open from breakfast to dinner on the water’s edge, with Table Mountain in the frame and a Sunday brunch. Native Coffee Roasters is the in-house coffee bar. The swimming pool, Sanctuary Spa and gym are not in this building — they sit at sister property Dock House Boutique Hotel & Spa, and V&A guests may use them. The pool is not heated. Valet parking is in a secure covered facility. Transfers, tours and restaurant bookings go through Guest Services.
This is a city hotel on a working harbour, not a safari lodge. You come for the location: the Waterfront on the doorstep, Robben Island and the aquarium a walk away, Table Mountain and the Atlantic beaches a short drive.
Why We Love It
We like this hotel for one unfashionable reason: you walk out of the door and you are already at the Waterfront. The 1904 warehouse on the pierhead still does the thing Cape Town hotels further inland cannot — Table Mountain over the Alfred Basin from a bedroom, boats in the marina, and breakfast at Ginja looking at the mountain.
It is a proper 94-room hotel, not a ten-suite hideaway. Lofts on the third floor, mountain rooms with a lounge if you want sitting space, piazza rooms if you like the buskers. Families can take interconnecting Mountain or Piazza rooms; loft rooms cannot take a cot, which is useful to know before you book.
We also like the honest split of facilities. The spa, gym and pool are at Dock House, the sister property, and the pool is not heated. Go2Africa still writes as if they sit in this building. They do not, and you are better off knowing that. What you do get here is the harbour, Ginja, and Cape Town’s easiest first night.

Who It's For
Travellers who want to be in the V&A Waterfront rather than in the City Bowl or on the Atlantic seaboard: couples in mountain-facing rooms, families who need interconnecting Mountain or Piazza rooms and a cot (not in a Loft). Not a safari lodge and not a quiet suburban boutique — the piazza is busy. Dock House next door is the pool and spa.
Best Time to Visit
Open year-round. Newmark 2023 fact sheet average day temperatures: about 26°C December–March, 21°C April–May, 19°C June–September, 22°C October–November. Summers are warm and can be windy; winters are typically rainy. Cape Town is known for four seasons in one day. Southern right whales are a seasonal Cape outing (hotel experiences list whale-watching cruises) — not viewed from the rooms as a guaranteed wildlife season.
