About This Property
RiverBend Lodge sits on a 14 000-hectare private concession inside Addo Elephant National Park — malaria-free Eastern Cape bush, with no day visitors on the concession and the Zuurberg Mountains and Sundays River Valley around it. Addo is South Africa’s third-largest national park (176 000 terrestrial hectares plus a marine reserve), founded in 1931 to protect the last 11 elephants; the population has recovered, and the park now holds the Big 5.
The lodge itself is eight standalone suites linked by a garden path: seven luxury suites and a honeymoon suite. Each has an extra-length king bed, air conditioning and a ceiling fan, an en-suite bathroom with separate bath and indoor shower, a private outdoor shower, and a veranda looking into the bush. The honeymoon suite adds a private plunge pool and fire pit. Interleading doors are available for families.
Game drives use open vehicles on the exclusive-use concession and in the public Main Camp section of Addo, so you cover private ground that sees far fewer vehicles (the lodge notes Main Camp can take up to 100 vehicle visits a day). Two Big 5 safaris a day are included on the all-inclusive rate, along with a mini-rangers course for children. Family groups can be hosted on their own vehicle. Birding runs to more than 300 species on the concession.
Meals are a mix of traditional and Pan-African cooking, paired with South African wines, served in the dining room or on the verandas. Private dinners in-suite or on your patio can be arranged; the all-inclusive rate also includes an introduction to South African wines (booking essential) and daily high tea. The Plumbago Spa (Go2Africa still calls it the Vitality Studio) offers treatments in the studio or in your suite.
Children of all ages are welcome. It is an easy self-drive from Gqeberha — mostly tar, no 4×4 required — and a natural first or last stop on a Garden Route itinerary. We would plan on at least three nights.
Why We Love It
We love that this is a private concession inside Addo, not a lodge looking over the public park. There are no day visitors here, and game drives still use Main Camp when that helps the sighting — so you get quiet private ground and the wider park, without sitting in a hundred-vehicle queue as a matter of course.
It is also one of the easier Big 5 stays to reach. You drive from Gqeberha on tar, the setting is malaria-free, and eight suites keep the place small enough that families can take their own vehicle and couples can still find a quiet veranda.
The honeymoon suite’s plunge pool and fire pit are the romantic card; the rest of the suites are generous, air-conditioned and set in gardens, with an outdoor shower if you want it. We would eat on the veranda, take both daily drives, and give the children the mini-rangers course rather than rushing on after two nights.
Three nights is the lodge’s own minimum recommendation. Use it as a bush start or finish to the Garden Route, not as a hurried overnight.

Location
How to Get There
From Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth / Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport)
The lodge is inside Addo Elephant National Park, reached on mostly tarred roads — no charter flight or 4×4 is required. The official FAQ gives about 45 minutes from Gqeberha; the lodge’s turn-by-turn driving notes via the N2, N10 and Paterson add up to roughly 70 minutes plus a short gravel approach. Transfers can be arranged (priced on request). Go2Africa lists Port Elizabeth International Airport as the nearest airport.
Official driving notes from Port Elizabeth: take the N2 towards Grahamstown; continue past Colchester (about 44 km / 27 minutes) and on to Nanaga (about 14.6 km / 14 minutes). At Nanaga take the N10 towards Cradock and Paterson (about 21.8 km / 13 minutes). At Paterson turn left onto the R324 towards Addo (about 25.7 km / 17 minutes). Turn right onto the gravel road signposted Zuurberg Pass (about 3.5 km). White RiverBend Lodge gates are on the right; press the reception intercom.
From the RiverBend gates
You are now inside Addo Elephant National Park (Big 5 area). Speed limit 30 km/h. For RiverBend Lodge and Pepper Grove House, turn right after 2.3 km to the lodge reception gates. For Long Hope Villa continue past those gates; the road turns left about 400 m further on.
From the Garden Route
Take the N2 north. The N2 becomes the N10 about 12 km after Colchester; follow the N10 towards Paterson. At Paterson turn left on the R342 towards Addo Elephant National Park. Continue about 24.5 km, past the main park entrance, then turn right on the R335 (Zuurberg road) for 2 km and right into the RiverBend gates.

Things to Do
At the property
Swim in the shared pool, sit on your veranda, or book a treatment at Plumbago Spa (in the studio or in-suite). Meals are in the dining room or on the verandas; private in-room dinners can be arranged. The bar, library and lounge are the indoor gathering points. An introduction to South African wines (four local wines with food pairing) is included on all-inclusive rates, booking essential. Children’s options include a mini-rangers course, mobile playrooms and baking with the chef.
In the area
Two Big 5 game drives a day work the private concession and Addo Main Camp. Tracking on foot, specialist birding and photography drives, night drives and stargazing, and bush picnics can be arranged. Hiking and cycling trails sit just outside the Big 5 fence line; a limited Big 5 cycle tour into the concession is offered. The park holds elephant, lion, buffalo, black rhino and a wide spread of antelope and birdlife.
Day trips
Addo Main Camp has a bird hide, interactive museum, curio shop, restaurant and the PPC hiking trail. Sundays River tours and an elephant interactive experience are listed by Go2Africa. Further afield, the lodge is a gateway to the Garden Route — Jeffreys Bay, Tsitsikamma (including ziplining in the forests), Knysna and Plettenberg Bay — typically as a road-trip continuation rather than a same-day outing.

Who It's For
Families (children of all ages, with a mini-rangers course and separate family game viewers), couples and honeymooners. A good first or last safari on a Garden Route or Cape Town itinerary, because it is malaria-free and an easy self-drive from Gqeberha. Not a vast, high-density Kruger-style reserve — the private concession is the point.
Best Time to Visit
Year-round. The lodge describes October–March as warm days with wildlife gathering at waterholes, and April–September as cooler, with crisp mornings, clear skies and good light for photography. A minimum of three nights is recommended (two full days of game viewing); four or five nights if time allows. Winter Stay Longer, Pay Less (20% for 3 nights / 25% for 4+ nights) is published for all-inclusive stays 1 May–30 September 2026.
