The name comes from its centrepiece: a beach-entry swimming pool, the kind that shelves gently from the edge, which is an unexpected thing to find at 1,400 metres in the Drakensberg escarpment mist.
For glamping, the units to look at are the Tented Tree rooms — canvas accommodation raised among the trees, available as singles or doubles. Why We Love It
Most Panorama Route stays are guesthouses that give you a bed and send you back out to the viewpoints. Beach Island does something different: it puts you under canvas in the trees, ten minutes from God’s Window and half an hour from Bourke’s Luck Potholes, with enough on site that a misty escarpment afternoon is not a write-off.
It is also one of the few genuinely family-friendly glamping options in this part of Mpumalanga. The slip and slide and go-karts are not what you expect from a tented stay, and they are exactly what makes it work with children.
