About This Property
AfriCamps Klein Karoo sits about ten minutes from the centre of Oudtshoorn, on a sprawling working ostrich farm with uninterrupted views of the Swartberg Mountains. It was the first AfriCamps farm in South Africa, run as a joint venture between two Oudtshoorn farming families, and it still has that hands-on, family-run feel.
The twelve tents are fully self-catering and properly kitted out, sleeping up to five but priced for two, which makes the site easy for couples and families alike. Days drift between the pool, the deck and the surrounding veld, where zebra, kudu and springbok roam freely across roughly 10,000 hectares.
It is an unusually good base for the Klein Karoo: just off the Garden Route, an easy halfway stop between Cape Town and Gqeberha, and within reach of the Cango Caves, the Swartberg Pass and the farm's own ostrich and meerkat encounters.
Why We Love It
We love that this is the real thing rather than a show farm. The ostrich tour takes you through an actual working operation, and the early-morning meerkat drive, coffee in hand while the colony stirs, is one of those small Karoo moments you remember.
It is also genuinely flexible. Self-catering tents with indoor fireplaces and electric blankets mean it works just as well for an off-season winter escape as a summer family week, and it is dog-friendly by prior arrangement.
Rooms & Details
The Glamping Tents
Twelve canvas tents are pitched well apart for privacy, each sleeping up to five across two extra-length queen beds and a single bunk. Inside you get a proper bed, an indoor fireplace, air conditioning and electric blankets for crisp Karoo nights, plus a private bathroom with a rain shower.
Kitchen, Braai and Deck
Every tent is fully self-catering, with a four-burner gas stove, microwave, bar fridge and crockery for five, so you can cook in or fire up the private braai. Pre-order a breakfast or braai basket of local produce if you would rather not shop, and unwind on the deck once the stars come out.
On the Farm
This is a genuine working ostrich farm of around 10,000 hectares, with free-roaming zebra, springbok, kudu, eland and more sharing the veld. There is a swimming pool for hot afternoons, battery backup in every tent for load-shedding, and the Swartberg range filling the horizon.
