Lake Bogoria National Reserve guide

Overview

Lake Bogoria National Reserve covers about 107 km² around Lake Bogoria, a shallow soda lake in the Great Rift Valley in Baringo County, north of Nakuru. It’s managed by Baringo County. The lake is a Ramsar wetland and part of the Kenya Lake System World Heritage Site, together with Lakes Nakuru and Elementaita.

The lake lies at the foot of the steep Siracho escarpment. Along its western shore, hot springs and geysers boil and spout steam, and the water around them is too hot to touch.

Lake Bogoria is one of the most important feeding places in the world for lesser flamingos, which can gather here in huge numbers. Visitors come to see the flamingos and hot springs, walk and cycle along the shore, and visit nearby Lake Baringo.

Wildlife & Biodiversity

Flamingos

Lesser flamingos feed on the algae in the lake, and their numbers can reach hundreds of thousands when conditions are right.

Other wildlife

Greater kudu live in the woodland around the lake, along with zebra, impala, dik-dik and baboons. More than 300 bird species have been recorded.
