Overview
Augrabies Falls National Park lies on the Orange River in the Northern Cape, about 120 km west of Upington. It was proclaimed in 1966 to protect the Augrabies Falls, where the river drops about 56 m into a deep granite gorge.
The name comes from the Khoi word for “place of great noise”. Below the falls, the gorge runs for about 18 km through a landscape of bare granite domes, rocky plains and dry riverbeds, with quiver trees and other desert plants.
Visitors come to see the falls from the boardwalks, drive to viewpoints such as Ararat and Oranjekom, and hike the Klipspringer Trail. Canoeing and rafting trips run on the river.
Wildlife & Biodiversity
Wildlife
Klipspringer, springbok, gemsbok, eland, giraffe and Hartmann’s mountain zebra live in the park, as well as leopard and caracal.
Reptiles and birds
The rocks are covered in colourful Broadley’s flat lizards. Black eagles, fish eagles and pale chanting goshawks are often seen.
