Arawale National Reserve guide

Overview

Arawale National Reserve covers about 533 km² in Garissa County in north-eastern Kenya, near the east bank of the Tana River. It was set up to protect the hirola, or Hunter’s hartebeest, one of the rarest antelope in the world.

The reserve is made of dry bushland and grassland. It’s managed by the Garissa County government, with Kenya Wildlife Service handling wildlife law enforcement.

Protection lapsed for many years, and the hirola population fell sharply. Since 2012, conservation groups have been working with the county and local communities to restore the reserve. There are no tourist facilities.

Wildlife & Biodiversity

The hirola is found only in north-eastern Kenya and south-western Somalia, and it’s listed as critically endangered.

Other wildlife

Topi, gerenuk, lesser kudu, Grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe and elephants also move through the area.
