Amani Natural Forest Reserve guide

Overview

Amani Nature Forest Reserve covers about 8,380 hectares in the East Usambara Mountains of north-eastern Tanzania, about 60 km from Tanga. It was declared in 1997 by joining six forest reserves with land donated by tea estates.

The Usambaras are part of the Eastern Arc Mountains, among the richest areas for plants and animals in Africa, with many species found nowhere else.

The reserve has walking trails, a botanical garden started in the German colonial era, and simple guesthouses. Visitors come for forest walks, birdwatching and butterflies.

Forest life

Many species of chameleon, frog and butterfly are found here, along with African violets, which grow wild in the Usambaras.

Birds

Rare forest birds include the Usambara eagle-owl, the long-billed tailorbird and the Amani sunbird.
