About This Property
InterContinental Table Bay Cape Town sits on Quay 6 of the V&A Waterfront, looking over the working harbour towards Table Mountain. President Nelson Mandela opened the building as The Table Bay Hotel in 1997. After an 18-month, R1 billion redevelopment it reopened in December 2025 as Cape Town’s first InterContinental — 306 guestrooms including 40 suites. Go2Africa still sells it as a Waterfront base with mountain and harbour views, and that geography has not changed.
Official rooms run from Classic (37–44 m², king or twins) and Premium (44–52 m², two queen beds) to Junior Suites (51 m²), One-Bedroom Suites (58–77 m²) and the signature Lion’s Head (117 m²) and Table Mountain (193 m²) suites. Table Mountain view, furnished balcony and Club Floor are published options on several categories. Every listed stay includes air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, a marble bathroom with separate bath and walk-in shower, bathrobes, hairdryer, tea and coffee, a work desk, in-room entertainment and an in-room safe.
Four dining rooms sit in the building. Flint & Fennel is all-day dining and afternoon tea, with breakfast on the Go2Africa bed-and-breakfast rate. Le Bistrot de JAN is the French-bistro restaurant of Michelin-starred chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen. The Botanist’s Table is the lobby lounge for fynbos-inspired cocktails and South African wines. Solandra is the heated outdoor pool deck for in-house guests, with pizza, gelato and drinks looking towards Granger Bay. Spa InterContinental and a fitness centre sit on site. Club InterContinental is a lounge upgrade. Families are named through Planet Trekkers, the kids’ club, two-queen Premium rooms and interconnecting Classic rooms.
This is a large city hotel on a working harbour, not a safari lodge and not a ten-suite hideaway. You come for the V&A on the doorstep, Table Mountain over the basin, and an easy first or last night in Cape Town.
Why We Love It
We like this hotel for the geography first: you are on Quay 6 of the V&A, looking at Table Mountain over a working harbour, with Victoria Wharf through a connecting door. That is still the trick Cape Town hotels further inland cannot copy.
It is a proper InterContinental now, not the old Table Bay in a new logo. Mandela opened the building in 1997; it came back in December 2025 after an 18-month rebuild, with 306 rooms, Flint & Fennel for breakfast, Jan Hendrik’s bistro downstairs, and a heated pool on the Solandra deck that is actually for hotel guests. Club InterContinental is there if you want the lounge. Planet Trekkers is there if you have children.
We also like knowing the scale. This is not a ten-suite hideaway. Classic rooms start at 37 m²; the Table Mountain Suite is 193 m². Parking is on site and may be charged. The spa, gym and four restaurants are in this building, not next door. What you come for is the Waterfront, the mountain over the basin, and an easy first night in Cape Town.

Who It's For
First-time Cape Town visitors, couples and families who want to be in the V&A Waterfront rather than in the City Bowl or on the Atlantic seaboard. Premium two-queen rooms, interconnecting Classics and Planet Trekkers suit families; Club InterContinental suits travellers who want a lounge. Not a safari lodge and not a quiet suburban guesthouse — it is a 306-room harbour hotel. Parking is on site but not published as free.
Best Time to Visit
Open year-round. Cape Town summers (roughly December–March) are warm and can be windy; winters are typically rainy. The V&A Waterfront and harbour views are the point of the address in every season. Southern right whales are a seasonal Cape outing, not viewed from the rooms as a guaranteed wildlife season. The hotel reopened under InterContinental in December 2025 after an 18-month redevelopment.
