About This Property
Shady trees and manicured lawns on the banks of the Sand River set the scene for MalaMala Main Camp, one of South Africa’s most storied safari camps and a byword for exceptional Big 5 game viewing. It sits at the heart of MalaMala Game Reserve — a sole-use private wilderness of some 13 300 hectares, with a 19-kilometre unfenced border with Kruger National Park and no other lodge vehicles on the land.
MalaMala was the first privately owned game reserve in South Africa to offer eco-tourism as an alternative to hunting. Guests regularly see the Big 5 as well as cheetah, African wild dog and a remarkable variety of birds; leopard sightings are described as virtually guaranteed. Game drives are the headline, with guided walks to pick up the smaller details of the bush.
The camp itself is classically comfortable rather than showy: traditional safari décor, original bronzes, works of art and historic photographs of the pioneer era. A spacious lounge opens onto an expansive wooden deck — a favourite perch for watching animals along the river. Facilities include a bar, a library with satellite television and internet, a safari boutique, a wine cellar, a swimming pool overlooking the floodplain, a small gym, a steam room and a massage service.
Thatched Luxury Rooms and Luxury Suites face the watering hole or the Sand River floodplains. Rooms are air-conditioned, with en-suite bathrooms, mini-bars, tea and coffee stations, and private decks. Suites add extra space, a lounge, a free-standing bathtub and an outdoor shower. One suite is universally accessible.
Breakfasts and lunches are served in the air-conditioned dining room. Dinner has been a camp tradition for more than 60 years: venison specialities and bush haute cuisine in the reed-enclosed boma, wines from the well-stocked cellar, then a nightcap around a log fire. Pre-drive tea with freshly baked tarts and cakes is a guest favourite.
Families are genuinely welcomed. Family rooms, a professionally run Junior Ranger programme for children under 12, and babysitting make it workable for mixed generations — while honeymooners and dedicated wildlife watchers are equally at home. The camp is unfenced, so antelope and even elephant may wander the lawns.
Why We Love It
We love MalaMala Main Camp for a privilege that is increasingly rare: a sole-use private reserve. No other lodge vehicles share this land, which is why the game viewing here has such a quiet intensity — Big 5, cheetah and wild dog on a regular basis, and leopard sightings that the camp can honestly call virtually guaranteed.
We also love the setting. The Sand River is a permanent artery through the Greater Kruger, and the camp’s decks, pool and rooms are arranged to watch it. Hippos in the channel, elephants on the floodplain, a leopard on a riverine path — this is safari from the veranda as much as from the vehicle.
The mood is pioneer rather than palatial: thatch, bronzes, a wine cellar, a reed boma that has hosted dinner for more than sixty years, and guides whose reputation is as much the point as the rooms. Families are properly provided for, with family rooms and a Junior Ranger programme, so it works as well for mixed generations as it does for a honeymoon.
If you want the most fashionable new-build lodge in the Sabi Sand, this is not that story. If you want one of the original photographic safari camps, on a river, with the run of a private wilderness, MalaMala Main Camp is why we still send people here.

Things to Do
At the property
Watch wildlife from the river deck, the pool and even from your room — the camp is unfenced and the Sand River draws a constant procession of animals. Cool off in the swimming pool, browse the library, visit the wine cellar and safari boutique, use the gym and steam room, or book a massage. Evenings gather at the Buffalo Bar and around the boma fire.
In the reserve
Twice-daily game drives in open vehicles, with specialist guides and a reputation for high-calibre tracking. Night drives. Guided walking safaris (not for pre-teens). Bird watching and photographic safaris. The Junior Ranger programme occupies younger guests. Because MalaMala is sole-use, you will not share sightings with vehicles from other lodges.
