About This Property

MCH Luxury Tented Camp sits on a rocky koppie in the Greater Makalali Private Game Reserve, in the Limpopo lowveld west of Kruger. The elevated position is the point of the place: the camp looks out over rolling bushveld towards the distant Drakensberg escarpment, and most of the day can be spent watching that view change.

Tents are raised above the surrounding bush and open onto shaded private decks. Each has indoor and outdoor showers and an unusual half-indoor, half-outdoor bath, along with air conditioning, a minibar and a writing desk. The camp runs largely on solar.

Guiding is personalised rather than scheduled around a full house, and the camp works particularly well booked on exclusive use by a family or a group. Rates are quoted fully inclusive of all meals and selected beverages.

Why We Love It

The Sleepout Deck is the thing we would build a stay around. Camps offering a genuine star bed are rarer than the marketing suggests, and having one on site rather than an hour’s drive away makes it easy to work in.

We also rate the exclusive-use option. At this size, taking the whole camp is within reach of a family group, and it turns a good safari into a private one without a private-villa price.

Rooms & Details

Luxury Tents

MCH Luxury Tented Camp - Luxury Tents

Raised above the bush and opening onto shaded private decks, the Luxury Tents pair canvas with air conditioning, a minibar and a writing desk. The elevation means the view starts from the bed.

Bathrooms and the Outdoor Bath

MCH Luxury Tented Camp - Bathrooms and the Outdoor Bath

Each tent has both indoor and outdoor showers plus a half-indoor, half-outdoor bath, which is the detail guests tend to remember. Soaking outside after an afternoon drive is the intended use.

Lounge and Library

MCH Luxury Tented Camp - Lounge and Library

The main areas are open-sided and face the view, with a library for the hot middle of the day. Evenings move to the firepit and boma.

Pool and Massage Sala

MCH Luxury Tented Camp - Pool and Massage Sala

The swimming pool and a massage sala both sit on the elevated deck line, so downtime keeps the same outlook as the drives. Spa treatments are booked on site.

Dining and the Sleepout Deck

How to Get There

The usual approach is to fly into Hoedspruit Eastgate (HDS) on a domestic hop from Johannesburg or Cape Town, then transfer by road to the reserve. Self-drive from Johannesburg is possible but long.

Makalali sits west of the Kruger and combines easily with the Panorama Route, the Blyde River Canyon or a second stop in one of the Greater Kruger private reserves.

Nearby Attractions

The Panorama Route, Blyde River Canyon and God's Window are all within reach of Hoedspruit, and the Kruger National Park and its private reserves lie to the east.

Things to Do

Guided game drives run morning and afternoon with Big Five tracking, supported by walking safaris and night drives. Scenic flights and bush picnics can be arranged.

Back at camp the pool, library and massage sala fill the middle of the day, and the Sleepout Deck offers a night in the open for those who want it.

Good to Know

Rates are fully inclusive of all meals and selected beverages. Children under 12 are welcome, and the camp is well set up for exclusive-use family or group bookings, though individual tents can also be booked.

Note that Go2Africa describes the setting as the Greater Kruger region; Greater Makalali is a separate private reserve west of the Kruger, not part of the open Greater Kruger system. This is a low-risk malaria area, so take the usual precautions and speak to your doctor before travelling.

Who It's For

Families and groups after an exclusive-use camp with strong guiding, plus couples who want a view-led tented stay rather than a large lodge.

Best Time to Visit

May to September is dry, cooler and easiest for game viewing. October to April is green, hotter and better for birding and newborn game. General guidance, confirm for your dates.
