About This Property

Makakatana Bay Lodge is a hidden gem on the western shores of Lake St Lucia (iSimangaliso Wetland Park) in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. This intimate, family-run lodge offers something genuinely rare — a safari experience that combines Big Five game drives with boat cruises through a UNESCO World Heritage wetland, all within a single property.

The lodge sits in a patch of coastal dune forest overlooking the lake, with six beautifully appointed suites that blend seamlessly into the indigenous vegetation. Each suite features hand-crafted furniture, luxurious linens, en-suite bathrooms with rain showers, and private decks where you can watch hippos wallowing in the lake below.

What sets Makakatana apart is the diversity of experiences. Morning game drives explore the Big Five reserves of Hluhluwe-iMfolozi (the oldest proclaimed reserve in Africa), while afternoon boat cruises glide through the St Lucia estuary — a watery world of hippos, Nile crocodiles, pelicans, fish eagles, and an astonishing 526 bird species.

The food is exceptional — think fresh linefish from the coast, locally sourced venison, and garden-fresh vegetables, served in the open-air boma or the elegant indoor dining room. The hosts, who have run the lodge for over two decades, bring a personal warmth that makes you feel like a treasured guest rather than a transaction.

Why We Love It

Makakatana is the kind of place that doesn't shout for attention but quietly delivers one of South Africa's most complete safari experiences. Where else can you see rhinos on a morning game drive, cruise past hippos on a lake in the afternoon, and walk on an empty Indian Ocean beach before sundowners?

The family-run atmosphere makes all the difference. The hosts know every guest by name, adapt the programme to your interests, and share their own passion for this extraordinary corner of KZN with infectious enthusiasm. The food is a highlight — genuinely delicious, not just “good for a bush lodge.”

It's also exceptional value compared to the big-name reserves. You get Big Five, wetlands, beaches, incredible birding, and heartfelt hospitality at a fraction of what you'd pay in the Sabi Sands or Kruger private reserves.
